A great example of getting involved is our partnership with Life Happens, a nonprofit that’s driven to provide unbiased information on how life insurance changes lives. Through this partnership, we’ve been privileged to get involved with the Life Lessons scholarship. This program, founded by Life Happens, helps support a college student or college-bound senior who has lost a parent or guardian with little to no life insurance.
Here we will share what that experience has been like for us, as well as how our agents can get involved to help support their own Life Lessons scholarship.
As an organization, Life Happens’ goal is to spread awareness about the importance of life insurance. As a non-profit, they offer education on how financial tools like life insurance can help provide you with a foundation to be financially successful. Whether that success is for financial goals like retirement or protecting your loved ones when the unexpected happens, the protection that life insurance provides cannot be overstated.
They use several outreach initiatives to deploy that education from public-service announcements to social media campaigns, and in doing so they help families across the nation secure coverage. Beyond that, Life Happens coordinates three national awareness campaigns a year: Insure Your Love in February, Life Insurance Awareness Month in September, and Disability Insurance Awareness month in May. All three campaigns help spread awareness for agents and their clients.
As one of their many outreach initiatives, the Life Lessons scholarship is designed to support college students who are facing the adverse effects of losing a parent. The cost of a college education is a huge financial burden to many families. That is especially true for students who have lost a parent who had little to no life insurance in place. Through the Life Lessons initiative, organizations have the chance to make an impact in the lives of individuals who are experiencing that hardship.
Any qualifying individuals are encouraged to submit essays and videos about how the death of a parent impacted their lives and ability to continue their education.
Since its creation, the Life Lessons Scholarship Program has donated $2.8 million in scholarships with over 750 recipients at over 375 schools. The money used to support these students helps illustrate the importance of life insurance in protecting loved ones from financial hardship.
Our parent company, Quility, is proud to sponsor MaKayla Cook as our 2022 Life Lessons scholarship recipient. MaKayla’s mother unexpectedly passed away in 2021 and unfortunately did not have any life insurance in place. MaKayla was about to start her sophomore year of school and dealing with the death of a parent as well as the costs that come with it was not an easy experience for her.
MaKayla applied for the Life Lessons scholarship shortly after losing her mother and has now become the first recipient of the Quility Life Lessons Scholarship.
Through this corporate sponsorship, we are supporting MaKayla for one academic year at Appalachian State University. This support is meant as an example of the support that comes with life insurance. It will help ease the financial burden that MaKayla has faced so that she can focus on her education instead.
Now a junior, MaKayla works 40-hour weeks at a local restaurant while keeping up with her regular coursework. She hopes to graduate with and work in the social work field and make her own impact.

Life Happens has made getting involved easy for Symmetry agents. By funding a minimum of $5,000 as a scholarship, anyone can make a huge impact on a student’s life. All entries go right to Life Happens. After sorting through the entries, Life Happens provides a group of possible recipients that you and your team can choose from.
Have your team look through this selection to learn more about the applicants and as a team choose someone you feel connected to.
After your team makes a selection, Life Happens will reach out to them and you can begin to start a dialogue with the recipient.
Your recipient’s story can then be shared as you and your team sees fit. This is a great opportunity to spread awareness about the importance of life insurance.
